Who is JD Vance?
James David Vance was born James Donald Bowman in Middletown, Ohio — about 30 miles northeast of Cincinnati — on Aug. 2, 1984.
He was given the name of his biological father but later took the name James David Hamel when his mother remarried. He officially took up JD Vance (taking the surname of his maternal grandparents) in 2013. His memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” chronicled his working-class upbringing in what’s been described by his publisher HarperCollins as “a poor Rust Belt town.”
Vance was raised by his grandparents due to an absentee father and his mother being an addict.
Education and military service
After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003, Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served as a military journalist when he was deployed to Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005, and he wrote in his memoir that he “was lucky to escape any real fighting but which affected me deeply nonetheless.” He used Cpl. James D. Hamel as his byline.
Vance left the Marines as a corporal in 2007 to attend Ohio State University using G.I. bill funds. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy in 2009 and then went to Yale Law School, where he received his J.D. in 2013 and also met his wife Usha.
PayPal (PYPL) founder Peter Thiel reportedly met Vance on a visit to Yale and encouraged him to become an entrepreneur rather than pursue a career in law.

Career
After law school, Vance practiced corporate law as a litigation associate at Sidley Austin, an American law firm representing clients in more than 70 countries. He then briefly worked as a principal at Mithril Capital Management, a venture capital firm tied to Thiel, and he invested in start-up businesses in the tech industry in the Midwest.
In 2017, Vance joined Revolution, a venture capital firm controlled by former AOL founder Steve Case, as a managing partner, leading investments in several companies.
Vance also participated in Revolution’s Rise of the Rest, an initiative started and championed by Case. The firm described the initiative as being intended to shine a spotlight on emerging startup ecosystems between the coasts.
Vance helped in the first round of funding, and since 2017, the fund has raised $300 million and backed more than 200 companies across more than 100 cities, according to Revolution.

In 2022, Vance was elected as U.S. Senator of Ohio for the Republican Party on a platform that the White House described as championing “issues such as securing our southern border, revitalizing American manufacturing, and fighting for the prosperity of working-class families across the country.” Thiel was among his campaign contributors.
In 2024, Trump asked Vance to be his vice presidential candidate and running mate. At 40, he is the third-youngest vice president ever elected into office.
How does JD Vance spend his money?
Vance is not known to be a lavish spender. Prior to moving to the White House, he and his wife raised their three children in the East Walnut Hills section of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Property listings app Zillow showed that homes in the neighborhood were recently sold at around $1.5 million and higher. Vance’s financial disclosure showed that he held a 30-year mortgage of between $250,001 and $500,000 at a 3.85% interest rate.
