Peter Doocy Confronts Trump On Tesla Photo Op: Americans Are ‘struggling With Their Retirement Accounts’

Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy questioned President Donald Trump’s decision to hold a Tesla photo op while Americans struggle amid economic uncertainty.
On Tuesday, Trump announced on Truth Social that he would soon be buying a Tesla “as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American.” During her White House briefing hours later, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that Tesla models would be driven to the White House complex for the president to look at before making a decision on a purchase.
Joined by Musk outside the White House, Trump did indeed inspect a few Teslas. While raving about the vehicles, he remarked how much he missed driving.
When Trump and Musk began taking questions, Doocy asked what message the president was trying to send by making a publish purchase of a brand new Tesla.
“What is your message, President Trump, buying a new car,” Doocy said, “while there are some folks who will see this clip at home and they are struggling with their retirement accounts down at the moment? Uncertainty about work ahead?”
Seemingly referencing the tariffs that have sparked trade wars with multiple countries, Trump claimed he “had to do this” while reassuring that Americans would “do great.”
“Well, I think they’re gonna do great,” Trump said with Musk standing beside him. “I think we’re– our country had to do this. We had to go and do this. They’ve taken away, other countries have taken away our business. They’ve taken away our jobs. I did it, initially, very strongly against — as you know — China and some others in the first term; and it was a very successful term. We had no inflation. We had the greatest economy in the history of our country. And then we had Covid, which we had to straighten out.”
Fox then cut away from the event during Trump’s response.
