Street Profits Want A Long Title Reign, But We Don’t Like Their Chances

The way SmackDown’s championship picture is shaping up, the odds seem against Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford keeping them until WrestleMania 41 — let alone beyond then.
It took Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford a long time to get gold back around their waists. The fourth Tag title reign of Street Profits’ WWE careers comes four years after the third.
That’s probably why, not long after they defeated #DIY’s Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa on SmackDown yesterday (Mar. 14), Dawkins told Cathy Kelley they plan to remain champs for long time:
“We ain’t losing these no time soon. So like we said, any team that want to get in our way, try to get a shot at these titles? We putting y’all in the dirt, ten toes down. Street Profits — bar none, fade all. We want the smoke.”
Love the confidence, but we’re not gonna be placing any bets on the Profits to beat The Usos’ record. WWE made it very clear on yesterday’s show that there are no shortage of challengers already in line for Tez & Dawk’s straps.
- Pretty Deadly already have a title shot in their fashionable pockets thanks to their victory over Motor City Machine Guns and Los Garzas of Legado Del Fantasma the previous Friday. We don’t know when that match will happen, but we expect it will be soon — and quite possibly when SmackDown is in Kit Wilson & Elton Prince’s home country on Mar. 28.
- LDF bumped into the Dawkins & Ford as they made their way out for the main event in Barcelona, with Santos Escobar wishing the Profits luck... because he wants his guys to win the titles from them.
- MCMG’s Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley reminded the previous champs they have unfinished business stemming from Ciampa & Gargano turning on the Guns to win the belts in the first place. Whether they settle that business before, after, or while trying to become champions again? They didn’t specify.
- And despite the Malfunction in the Middle that cost them the titles in Spain, Ciampa & Gargano should be able to stay on the same page long enough to get a rematch and/or another title shot.
Mix all that up during WrestleMania season, and you’ve got the makings of a very nice, “get as many people as we can on the card” multi-team match for the Showcase of the Immortals. This is far from original fantasy booking — I’ve seen it enough different places it was impossible to figure out who proposed it first — but booking two or three title changes between now and April 19-20 in Las Vegas could be a really fun way to set-up, say, a five-team ladder match.
Long title reigns are definitely a thing in the Triple H Era, but the Chief Creative Officer has made an exception for the blue brand’s tag belts. Since last year’s ‘Mania, the only team that’s held the WWE Tag titles for longer than 90 days was #DIY, whose just ended run with the straps lasted 98.
We absolutely could be wrong. The Profits could be the team that breaks this trend, retaining through WrestleMania 41 for the kind of run Judgment Day’s gotten with the red brand belts on a couple occasions. But looking at the way the division’s been laid out and the calendar, we’re not gonna bet on it.
