SIBU (March 1): The familiar hum of a sugarcane juicer fills the air at the Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2 Ramadan Bazaar here, as vendors gear up for the fasting month, which begins tomorrow (March 2).
Among them is 25-year-old Atta, who is hopeful that good weather will bring large crowds to the bustling bazaar.
As in previous years, he is selling sugarcane juice at RM4 for a small bottle and RM10 for a larger one.
“There are no changes in our prices. We just hope for hot weather because that’s when sugarcane drinks are most in demand,” he told The Borneo Post when met at his stall.
Originally from Pontianak, Indonesia, Atta has been selling sugarcane drinks every Ramadan since 2017.
“Based on past experience, the smaller bottles tend to sell better than the bigger ones,” he added with a smile.
On his expectations for this year’s sales, he said it would largely depend on the weather.
He also shared that the fresh sugarcane stalks he uses are sourced from Kabong and Kuching.
With today marking the first day of Ramadan Bazaar business, he anticipates larger crowds flocking to the bazaar around 5pm.
Atta, who runs the stall with a partner, also sells a variety of other beverages, including green tea, air bandong, limau somboi (lime with preserved plum), chocolate, and coffee.
His stall operates daily from 2pm to 6pm.
“There are three other stalls selling sugarcane drinks as well,” he added.
As for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Atta said he always returns home to Pontianak to celebrate with his family.

Meanwhile, the Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 2 Ramadan Bazaar coordinator Khalid Zaini, when contacted, said this year’s bazaar features 110 stalls—an increase from last year’s 105.
“The stalls offer a wide variety of food, beverages, and merchandise,” he added.
