The small village of Churchville, NY, has just around 2,000 residents, but this tight-knit community enjoys many amenities in town and around Rochester and the Monroe County area. 

For seniors who are visiting upstate New York, the following are some fun spots to check out in Churchville.

1. Churchville Park

Churchville Park is one of the best places in Churchville to partake in outdoor recreation. The 742-acre park includes:

  • Boat launch for non-motorized boats
  • Fishing
  • Geocaching
  • Natural ice skating rink
  • Playgrounds
  • Seasonal disc golf course, with baskets up from mid-April through mid-November
  • Soccer fields
  • Tennis and pickleball courts

The park also features six lodges and five shelters available for rental, with some capable of accommodating 100+ people. For seniors who want to relax or exercise outside, Churchville Park has lots of space to do so.

2. Churchville Golf Course

Established in 1932, Churchville Golf Course has 27 holes of championship golf. There’s an 18-hole, par-72 course with four sets of tees on each hole. The course includes water hazards and penalty areas to present challenges for golfers of all skills.

There’s also a 9-hole, par-36 course for short-game lovers. The venue also includes an all-grass driving range, a chipping green and a putting green, all of which are open to the public. With affordable rates and discounts on walking, it’s easy to become a regular at Churchville Golf Course.

3. Trips to Rochester

Rochester is fewer than 20 miles away from Churchville, so seniors who are in the Churchville area can access a vast array of attractions just a short drive away. Some of the top things to do in Rochester, the third-largest city in New York, include:

  • Seneca Park Zoo: The Seneca Park Zoo is home to diverse animal species from around the globe. Visitors can see exhibits featuring animals like snakes, elephants, lions, tigers, penguins, wolves, naked mole rats, baboons, otters and more. The zoo also offers guided walking tours and animal experiences like giraffe feedings and rhino encounters.
  • The Strong National Museum of Play: This unique museum is dedicated to the history of play and features interactive exhibits on themes like board games, dolls, video games and arcade games. For those who love musicals and plays, Rochester Broadway Theatre League shows are a must to add to the calendar.

Rochester also provides access to the Finger Lakes, a group of 11 lakes south of Lake Ontario that are popular travel destinations. Churchville residents can take day or weekend trips to the region and explore attractions like wineries, museums, state parks, boat cruises and more.

4. Churchville Dam

During the day, a visit to the Churchville Dam provides a peaceful way to relax surrounded by nature and the sounds of rushing water in a waterfall-life atmosphere. At night, the Churchville Dam comes alive, bathed in LED color-changing lights in hues designed to reflect the holidays and seasons.

Stop by at 9:30 p.m. any night to see a pretty 15-minute light show at the dam. It’s a unique attraction to take visitors to, a space that’s immersed in nature, lit up in a dazzling presentation.

5. Churchville Walking Routes

Churchville is a very walking-friendly village. The village includes several walking routes that residents can access, seen on the map here, with routes ranging from three-quarters of a mile to 2.5 miles.

Choose a route that will take you along various village landmarks, such as:

  • Black Creek
  • Churchville Park
  • Main Street

For seniors who want a bit of a longer walk in the Churchville area, check out the Black Creek: Route 19 to Churchville Dam trail, an easy 4.2-mile walk that’s popular with birdwatchers because of the abundance of wildlife along the route.

There’s also the West Shore Trail, which starts at Howard Avenue and follows the former West Shore Railroad. The paved trail features planted daffodils that serve as remembrance for veterans, as well as a Heritage Tree Program and a vintage caboose.

6. Newman Riga Library

The Newman Riga Library on Main Street provides a diverse collection of books, DVDs, audiobooks and other resources available for free rental. The library also provides internet access and quiet places for reading and studying.

Visit the Newman Riga Library’s event calendar to find community events at the library, too. Events include antiques appraisals, box-making workshops and board meetings for those who want to get involved with library operations.

7. Mill Creek Golf Club

Another golf course in the Churchville area is Mill Creek Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course that provides views of the Rochester skyline, windswept fescues and the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes. The course also has a Tavern Restaurant, which features flat-screen televisions and beautiful views of the course.

Seniors ages 60 and older can get discounted rates for the course. Unlimited golf play memberships are also available.
