Advice For Main Passenger Not Flying Return Leg Of Rewards Flight

Card image cap

I'm flying with my wife to Miami in a few weeks time, and I've booked a rewards flight for both of us, using avios and an Amex 2 for 1 voucher. The booking is in my name, she's an extra passenger on it. We'll both be flying out together, but I can't fly back with her on the return flight as I have to stay for a few more days for work. I'm not worried about getting my money back, the only thing I care about is making sure my wife can definitely get back home on this flight.

Options I'm considering are:
1 - Fly there, once we're there both of us check in onto the return flight, she tells them once she's on board that I've had to change plans last minute. Upside is she's definitely then on the plane and will be able to get back home. Downside is that I might get in trouble with BA.
2 - Fly there, once we're there only my wife checks in, I just don't check in and don't turn up. I don't know whether it's even possible to check in my wife without checking me in, given I'm the person the booking is under. So downside is that this might not be possible, and even if it is I might still get into trouble with BA for not flying back.
3 - Fly there, call them from there and explain the situation. Downside is that this will waste an hour or so of our short trip there, and also there's a risk that they'll say it's not allowed and not let her onto the plane back.
4 - Call them now, ahead of flying out, explain the situation. The risk is they'll tell me that it's not allowed, and then we won't even be able to get there on our current flights, let alone get her back.

Has anyone been in this specific situation - would love advice based on your experience on what's the best thing to do.
