The Story Tinder has just released their “Year in Swipe” report for 2024, which surveys the major online dating trends of the previous 12 months while attempting to predict what the future will bring, and there’s one standout theme visible in all the data: singles are dating with intention, leaving behind the situationships and ambiguity of the past to focus on the top “must-haves” in a partner: trust, physical attraction and shared values. RELATED: Best Online Dating Sites And Tinder is following their lead, despite its reputation as a hookup app. To help people put their goals front and center, they’ve created an interactive Vision Board, to be released later this week, that will allow singles to set their dating intentions for 2025. These moves are part of a larger trend toward “loud looking,” which foregrounds things like setting boundaries and stating intentions in the name of dating with greater purpose. The Snapshot If last year was about “dating for the plot,” letting things play out gradually and evolve or not evolve, 2025 is setting up to be a year of confidently stating needs, desires and expectations, without apology or compromise. Melissa Hobley, Tinder’s Chief Marketing Officer, put it this way: “Singles are embracing intentionality in their dating lives—being upfront about what they want and refusing to settle.” What does that look like in practice? Expect more and more singles to state, explicitly, what they’re looking for in their bios. We’ve already seen trending phrases like “I’m looking for a man in finance” or the much-coveted “gamer girlfriend” generate endless buzz (and memes), but these light-hearted jokes actually point to a deeper shift in the dating zeitgeist. In fact, according to Tinder’s own data, more and more singles are enlisting the help of friends to vet their prospective dates or pre-screen profiles on their behalf. The Lesson Fellas, there’s a lesson to be had here, especially if you’re single and looking for something serious. If the Tinder study is correct and more and more singles are looking for substance over short-term ambiguity, craft a dating profile that clearly states your dating goals and intentions. In the latest Tinder survey of singles, the most desirable character traits in a partner were trustworthiness (40%), shared values (31%), and emotional availability (30%), summed up by this standout statistic: nearly 45% of singles are “seeking a Golden Retriever type,” someone who brings the loyal, friendly, energetic and optimistic energy If that sounds like you, ride this “loud looking” wave to a new and better relationship in 2025, and leaving the dating woes of 2024 where they belong: in the past.
