NPCOA marks Falls Prevention Awareness Week Sept. 23-27 with speaker event, luncheon and Falls Risk Assessments to help older adults in Natchitoches stay falls-free

Did you know that falling is NOT a normal part of aging?

Natchitoches Parish Council on Aging (NPCOA) is committed to empowering all older adults in Natchitoches to reduce their risk of falls, which are one of the greatest causes of serious injuries and death among people over age 65. On September 23-27, 2024, NPCOA is partnering with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to mark Falls Prevention Awareness Week.

As part of this national outreach campaign, NPCOA is holding a Falls Awareness event to raise awareness among older adults in our hometown. Monday’s event will feature ‘How was your Trip?’ A discussion by experts on treating Falls & Fall Prevention’ by community medical personnel, Falls Risk Assessments throughout the week with local Physical and Occupational Therapists and for those that cannot travel an online falls risk assessment tool available at no cost. Visitors to the  www.ncoa.org/tools/falls-free-checkup can complete a short survey that screens them for the most common fall risk factors.

“It’s important for us to be the place in which older adults can not only find entertainment and social engagement, but resources too. This is our first time to partner with NCOA and host a National Falls Prevention Awareness event.  Gaining & strengthening our partnerships with local medical staff and businesses allows us to provide our members with quick, sound advice and people that support our mission and care for our older adults,” said Alice Barrios, Executive Director, NPCOA.
