Asha To Induct Rev. Laverne Joseph, Beth Burnham Mace To Hall Of Fame
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The American Seniors Housing Association (ASHA) has announced its 2025 Senior Living Hall of Fame inductees. Rev. Laverne Joseph and Beth Burnham Mace will be inducted this month at ASHA’s annual meeting in Phoenix, joining a roster of 27 previous honorees.
The individuals were selected by the Senior Living Hall of Fame selection committee, which is chaired by Larry Cohen of Trustwell Living. Other members include Lois Bowers (McKnight’s Senior Living), Steve Monroe (The SeniorCare Investor), Tim Regan (Senior Housing News) and Matt Valley (Seniors Housing Business).
Mace is trained as an economist and spent 17 years at AEW Capital Management, one of the first institutional investors in the seniors housing sector. Following her time as director at AEW, she served as chief economist and director of research and analytics for the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC), taking on the role in 2014, following her time as a volunteer on the NIC Board. During her nine-year tenure with NIC, Mace led the organization’s research initiative on the “forgotten middle,” focusing on developing more affordable and lower cost seniors housing options for middle-income residents. Following her retirement in 2023, she was named to the board of directors at Brookdale Senior Living.
Joseph’s experience includes leading the Peace Memorial Church in Chicago for 21 years, where he served as the executive director of the church’s skilled nursing building, which he expanded. Following his time with the church, Joseph joined the Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF), a sponsor and manager of housing and services for seniors, persons with disabilities and low-income families. While with the RHF, from which he retired in 2021, Joseph helped triple the organization’s portfolio, which grew to 197 communities located throughout 29 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Joseph has also held leadership positions with LeadingAge and its California affiliate, testified before Congressional committees on the issue of affordable housing and served as a delegate-at-large to the White House Conference on Aging.
“Beth Burnham Mace was a major force in generating investor participation in senior living communities while at AEW and subsequently as the Chief Economist for the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC). And Rev. Laverne Joseph grew and operated the largest portfolio of affordable housing for older adults in the U.S. for more than 30 years while at the helm of Retirement Housing Foundation,” says David Schless, president and CEO of ASHA. “They both helped advance our industry, and we are grateful to both for their commitment to senior living.”
