Dj Bettencourt: Weathering An Evolving Insurance Landscape

Catastrophic wildfires and hurricanes across America are undeniably reshaping the insurance landscape, and New Hampshire is not immune to the potential effects.

Take, for instance, the wildfires in California, which have wrought an estimated $75 billion in insured losses. This staggering figure serves as a wake-up call, reminding us that we must prepare for potential repercussions right here in our own backyard.

The devastation we witness in California is truly heart-wrenching. Homes lie in ruins, and communities have been forever altered. We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave firefighters and first responders who have faced unimaginable challenges, working tirelessly to save lives and protect property. Their courage is a testament to the human spirit, and we stand with them in solidarity as they confront the aftermath of this tragedy.

Now, you might think that what happens thousands of miles away doesn't concern us here in New Hampshire. But let me assure you, insurers operating in California will have to recalibrate in response to these disasters. Unfortunately, some of that financial burden will inevitably find its way to our doorsteps in the form of higher premiums.

Homeowners' insurance rates are determined by various factors, including personal risk and the expected costs of future claims. When disasters strike, those costs ripple outward, affecting us all. If a hurricane or wildfire destroys homes, the demand for materials like lumber skyrockets, leading to higher prices nationwide. This, in turn, drives up the cost of repairs and, yes, your insurance premiums.

We must also recognize that catastrophic weather events have a profound impact on reinsurance. When primary insurers face a wave of claims, they, too, will raise premiums and set aside more funds for losses. This tightening of the market can lead to higher costs and reduced availability of coverage. We must remain vigilant and proactive, as these changes affect us all.

Now, I believe in the power of competition. Here in New Hampshire, we are fortunate to have over 200 insurance carriers working hard to provide us with choices. In a competitive market, if one insurer raises premiums excessively, they risk losing customers to others who offer better deals. That's the beauty of our state's free-market system—a system that keeps our premiums among the lowest in the nation.

So, what can you do in the face of these challenges? Let me share a few ideas:

Shop Around: Explore quotes and coverage options from different insurers. The market is dynamic, and you might discover a better deal or more comprehensive coverage that suits your needs.

Engage with Insurers: Don't hesitate to ask your insurance provider about discounts for risk-reduction measures. Whether it's installing fire-resistant materials or upgrading your home's safety features, proactive steps can lead to substantial savings.

Prepare for the Unexpected: Adopt risk-reduction strategies for your home. Maintain clear space around your property, keep gutters clean, and ensure that your home is equipped with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. These simple actions not only protect your home but may also lead to lower insurance premiums.

Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on changes in the insurance market and any new legislation that could impact your coverage. The New Hampshire Insurance Department offers resources to help navigate trends and regulatory shifts.

As your insurance commissioner, I am committed to ensuring that New Hampshire's insurance markets remain resilient, vibrant, and competitive in the face of adversity. We will continue to nurture a market that meets your needs through innovation, choice, and quality service. Our free-market system empowers you to make informed decisions, providing you with the freedom to choose the best coverage for you and your family.

While the effects of distant disasters may seem far removed, their impact on our insurance market is very real. As we face rising costs and potential challenges, we must remain vigilant. By understanding your coverage, shopping around, and implementing risk-reduction strategies, you can protect both your property and your financial well-being.

Together, we can effectively navigate the complexities of the insurance landscape and foster a competitive market that offers affordable, quality coverage for all Granite Staters. We will ensure that New Hampshire stands ready to weather any storm - both literal and metaphorical - that may come our way.
