[ca] The Term Styrofoam Is Trademarked, But No One Knows What Polystyrene Is.

I work for a company in California that people use to help manage waste streams. Styrofoam being something that gets thrown away but can be recycled depending, is something this company helps track. But my boss doesn't want to use the term Styrofoam in our software since it's trademarked, hence calling it polystyrene. But no one knows what that is. I know trademarks can be genericized, but it's not like we'd have any interest in proving that in court if it were so. Can we just do something like say "polystyrene, more commonly known by the trademarked name Styrofoam"?
Thanks.
