[employment] Recruiter Just Said That They Didn’t Go Ahead With My Interview Because The Company Was Looking For A Woman

Hello all, I am looking for new opportunities and reached out to old recruiters I had in my Linkedln. One of them(reputable staffing agency) replied that they had an opportunity with a telecom company. After doing initial recruiter interview I did not hear anything for a week. Today I reach out to the recruiter asking about the status, they mentioned that the company did not go ahead with my application. I asked how could I improve and they said that “it was more that they are looking for a woman”

I am not versed in law so I was wondering if this was legal. Any help would be great
