[mi] Mother Passed Away. A Couple Years Later Sold Her House. Discovered Her Principle Residency Exemption For Property Taxes Was Never Removed During Those Two Years After Sale. Could The City/county They Come After Us For Property Taxes In The Future?

Hi,

  1. Mom passed away with 4 beneficiaries and a trust.
  2. We paid property taxes for about 3 years while we worked to sell the house.
  3. House was sold.
  4. Found out that the principle residency exemption (you live there as your main home, so you get a property tax discount) shouldn’t have been applied for those 3 years which gave us a substantial tax discount on property taxes.

The new owner has taken over the home.

Did the city lose their chance to re-evaluate whether the house qualified for that exemption at the home sale or is it possible they could some how come after us in the future for those taxes?
