[michigan] Broke Lease And Leasing Agency Is Not Providing Information Or Security Deposit

Card image cap

I broke a lease with a rental agency in SE Michigan back in August. The lease had a clause stating that the agency was required to attempt to re-rent the unit, and if they were able to I would no longer be liable for rent payments. I’ve been pestering the agency to provide me with information about what’s going on, but they’ve been very cryptic. What I know is that I broke the lease in August, they re-rented the unit sometime between then and November, and the lease “officially” expired December 1st. I’m very frustrated not knowing how much money they owe me and I believe by Michigan law they have 30 days to return my security deposit and provide a list of itemized charges deducting from it. Can I consider filing suit if I don’t receive this information by December 31st?

EDIT: The lease actually expired November 30th, so today marks the end of the 30 day period for them to get the deposit returned.
