“mural” Landlord Painted In Front Of My Store Window

Card image cap

I own a retail store in a newly purchased shopping center. We are a flagship store, been there for 50 years. Previous owners remodeled the center and built a two story addition in front of 1/2 of our storefront, (which is about 1,000 square feet of my 3,000 square foot store). Where we once saw the sunset and had storefront parking, we now have a stucco wall.

New owners purchase and make changes… paint the whole center a lighter color, which actually helped bring light into that side of the store… but they also build a seating area in front of the other 1/2 of our storefront, where no one sits, but have those huge blue building blocks for kids, that teens throw around and build a big mess of a blue pile and leave their trash around. So my whole storefront looks like garbage.

This week, they hire a painter to do a commission piece on that brightened up wall….

It’s a dark teal/blue splash with pink and other splashes of color that is so jarring, we can hardly focus, it looks like an 80’s painting with the neon streaks and wiggle marks. My store is the only store that directly faces this wall, it’s literally as if they came into my store and painted one of my walls.

All the colors of my store are light creams and neutral calming colors.

My lease isn’t up for a few years, but these changes directly affect my business. Oh and my CAM helped pay for all this, which is so insulting.

Any thoughts on how to deal with this (besides putting frosted glass up which would create another problem).

I’ve asked them if they are trying to get rid of me, and they insist no… the center would suffer as we are a destination location, so my customers would follow wherever I go…. They seem oblivious yet keep making decisions that hurt my business directly and how we function daily.
