25k Settlement For Minor Car Accident

Card image cap

hi!! as the title says, i was in a really minor car accident in 2021. i accidentally backed into a a truck in the parking lot of DPS office while trying to take my driving test. i was pulling out of my parking spot and the truck was coming down the wrong way of a one way. i saw the truck in my rear view so i tried to hit the brakes but my foot landed on the gas pedal instead. i couldn't have gone more than 8mph when i backed into them. i hit the truck on the driver side tire. no visible damage to the truck, but i had a busted taillight. we exchanged info and insurance didn't cover the accident because i wasn't listed on the insurance. radio silence for two years.

i was served papers late 2022 or early 2023 stating that i was being sued for physical damages to the PASSENGER who was in the front seat. she claimed she was experiencing extreme pain that left her unable to get a job. i was contacted by a lawyer in april 2023 who took my statements and wrote a declaration i had to sign. a deposition was scheduled for august 2023 which i attended via zoom. the last time i was contacted by my lawyer was the same day as the deposition. i haven't heard anything since and assumed it got dismissed because what a ridiculous claim. my dad called me today saying he had a letter for me and i asked him to open it and send photos of it. the letter was addressed to my first address, not even the one i was living at when i was in contact with my lawyer. the ketter was signed and dated for march 7, 2024. i haven't heard from my lawyer in almost 2 years and i can't believe im getting screwed over something that really couldn't have happened. there's no way my tiny 2013 chevy sonic could've caused enough damage to a lifted truck that was also not going fast.

is there any way i can get out of this? i'm only 23 and barely make 27k a year, not sure how or why this settlement was reached without me being contacted directly. not sure how legal it is to have my wrong address too and have sent such an important letter without notifying me via email. i'm not sure what to do and would like any advice. i'm able to answer any questions as long as it can help my situation :/
