9yo Son Recorded Teacher During Abusive Rant

Seeking advice

A little backstory is needed, I think: My 9yo son has a teacher that regularly treats him poorly and differently from other students. There have been instances where the teacher singles my son out to embarrass him in front of the class, including fat shaming.

Today my son came home very upset that his teacher had made him feel embarrassed and ashamed and he had recorded 6 minutes of audio on his Apple Watch to show me what was said. The audio was painful to listen to, the teacher berated my son for the entirety of the clip and acted completely inappropriately for a teacher. I think it’s bad enough to be fired for or at least seriously reprimanded.

I obviously immediately contacted the principal about this and she said she will be conducting an investigation into the matter. I only told her what was said by the teacher and I did not tell them that my son had recorded the teacher.

So, my concern is about the audio. I’d like to share this recording with the principal as it’s clear and damning evidence of the teacher crossing a line, but I know Illinois is a two-party consent state.

Is there some repercussion for my child making this recording? I know he is not allowed to be on his watch at school, but he obviously doesn’t know the legality of recording someone, he just felt scared. Would sharing the audio end up biting us in the ass?

Thanks in advance for any insight!
