Abandoned Vehicle With A Lein

Card image cap

I have a buddy who has an abandoned 1996 jeep buried in the woods on his deceased father's property in Texas. We got on the discussion of me building an offroad truck for fun and how this seemingly abandoned jeep would fit the bill. He gave it to me for free in exchange for dragging it off the property as it has been open to the elements with no doors, wheels or drive train for an unknowable amount of time. It was an absolute mess.

He didn't have the title obviously as the history around this derelict is unknown outside of his father purchasing it word of mouth from someone.

As I was digging through the Vin and doing title checks to make sure it was not stolen, I discovered it has a lien on it from the original purchasing financer (A little credit union) located in Florida. The vehicle's last recorded odometer reading according to records was 74,000 miles and as it sits in my buddies shop it has 240,000 miles.

I can't get a bonded title obviously if there is an active lien on it according to Florida and Alabama (The two locations it was registered in).

I don't really want to get my buddy in legal trouble as he is the executor of his deceased father's estate and is trying to juggle that madness with his bickering family, but as the same time I now have a corpse of a jeep I seemingly can't do anything with now.

Would it be wise to contact this credit union and ask them details on it or find out what the options are if?
