Apartment Complex Wants Me To Sign A New Addendum Involving A Deal They Have With Xfinity. Xfinity Has Already Made Changes To My Account Without My Approval.
(The region is Florida, USA).
Today, I got a letter from my apartment complex stating that they have partnered with Xfinity to provide a bulk internet plan to the complex. They want everyone to come into the office and sign an addendum where they add 75$ to our monthly rent as they'll be providing the complex with 500 Mbps internet through Xfinity.
I was already paying for 500 Mbps internet through Xfinity for a cheaper price due to a 24 month deal with Xfinity that I signed up for back in March 2024. However, when I logged into my Xfinity account today it showed my monthly internet bill as $0.00, and that they had issued me a partial refund. Whenever I try to view my plan the website automatically reroutes me to a page that simply says "Good news! Xfinity service is included at your address. We've partnered with your community to bring Xfinity service to your location." with no other options on the page.
I need advice on what I can do to avoid having to pay more for the same internet, I haven't signed the addendum but the letter made it sound like that I would be getting charged on my next rent payment anyways.
I renewed my lease with the apartment complex back in October and the renewed term started on January 2nd. I scoured the lease for information on addendums, utilities/internet, etc. and I can't find anything that would require me to sign new addendums nor require me to pay more in my monthly rent for internet, if anything I found text that stated otherwise. I've copied the relevant parts of the lease below:
"Internet service to your dwelling will be paid by you directly to the utility service provider."
"No rent increases or lease contract changes are allowed before the lease term ends, except for those in a written addendum signed by both you and us, or by reasonable changes of apartment rules listed in part 19."
"Part 19. We may make reasonable changes to written rules, effective immediately, if they are distrubuted and applicable to all units in the apartment community and do not change dollar amounts listed in page 1." (Page 1 lists the amount I pay for rent and the length of my lease term, neither of which mention anything about internet or utilities).
The only other thing I could find in the lease that may apply was this one line in the utilities section: "Cable channels that are provided may be changed during the lease term if the change applies to all residents." I don't know if cable channels counts as the same thing as internet, but I would assume/hope not.
