Are My Parents Responsible For Storing My Exs Belongings? Indiana

My ex and I moved in with my parents in early 2021. He lived in the detatched garage. Him and I broke up in fall 2021 and I moved in with my brother, and later my current fiance. He stayed in my parents garage.
In August of 2023 I and my fiance moved in with my parents again. Ex was still there. He was arrested in Jan of 2024 and was sentenced to 18 months in jail. He can get out in July of this year. We have protection orders against him and can have no contact with him.
My parents own the house, there was no written lease but he did pay them a few hundred a month in rent.
My parents have been holding onto his things (everything he owns and a vehicle and moped/scooter thing) for 13 months now. But my mom is sick of things taking up the space and it is needed for storage and to get in and make repairs to damage he had caused. Legally are they required to keep his things for him? Will they get into trouble or can he sue them if they throw it all away? If they got a storage unit for it all could they make him pay them back the cost of the unit before they turn it over to him?
He apparently has no one to come collect it for him, his sister wants nothing to do with helping him and the last we knew he was going to the homeless shelter when he was released from jail.
