Assaulted After Reckless Driving

Card image cap

Hi all,

Last month, I was driving on I-94 in the far right lane when another driver swerved into me while trying to make a last-second exit. They didn’t stop immediately, continuing for about ¾ of a mile before finally pulling over.

A witness who saw everything stopped with me, and I got their info. Fortunately, I also had dashcam footage. As I finished speaking with the witness, the other driver took the next exit without attempting to exchange information. I followed and found them pulled over. When I asked them to roll down their window to exchange info, they refused.

Since they wouldn’t cooperate, I called 911. While on the phone, the driver’s husband arrived in a separate car, started yelling at me to “figure this out like men,” then punched me in the face and stomped on my phone (which was still connected to 911). He then got back in his car.

When police arrived, I explained what happened. They cited the driver for reckless driving and no insurance and arrested the husband for assault.

I’m now out $500 for my deductible plus phone repair costs. This is my first accident in 15+ years, and I’m unsure how to proceed.

Does anyone have recommendations on recovering my deductible or other resources?

Thanks in advance. (Throwaway account for obvious reasons.)
