Aunt Filed Unemployment In My Disabled Mom’s Name And My Dad Had To Pay The Back Taxes.

To preface: I’m the daughter (19f) of a mentally disabled woman(45f) and my dad(48m) came to this country 20 years ago. A couple years back, my grandmother who I live with got covid and had a stroke and needed in-house care and my aunt(57f) stepped up to the plate. However she is known to have abused substances throughout her life and lies, cheats and scams to get money. Usually through disability, social security, unemployment and other welfare benefits and unclaimed funds. She helps people with their taxes as well.

During Covid my aunt filed for unemployment benefits in my mother’s name. I was underage at the time so I didn’t know where she got all this money for a brand new Lexus but she did. Around this time she was also funneling money from my elderly grandmothers live savings to her pockets for whatever reasons. She got the Lexus repossessed because she couldn’t afford the payments and the abundant money from early Covid dried up as the years gone by.

My parents file jointly, my aunt is my mom’s godmother and because she helps everyone with government assistance she knows all of my mom’s information. My first year of college before tax returns my dad was very confused by the fact the IRS (I think) expected him to pay back taxes from the unemployment amounting to $3-$4,000. We logged into my mom’s NY.Gov accounts that my aunt conveniently changed the passwords on to acquire a 1090 form so we can report it as fraud but nothing came of it. When tax return season came around they took a lot of my father’s hard earned money. I have my aunt on video admitting to and dismissing everything. Her and my father also hate eachother.

I also have letters from Wells Fargo where she I think used my moms name to open up a bank account and when the debts got to bad she claimed my mom passed a way, so they sent a letter about who will be paying the outstanding debts.

Although this is from the last two years do I have a case? Is this identity theft? Is there anything I can do to bring justice to my parents and grandma? Feel free to ask questions
