Breaking Lease Early

Hey guys, so me and my husband just bought a house. We are set to close on February 25 and our lease for our apartment does not end until April 9. So we will be paying one extra month in our apartment, while not living there. I asked about breaking the lease early and they basically told me in order to break the lease early, for literally one month I would have to essentially pay 3 months of rent. Because it would be the rent for the last month and then two extra months, which I'm confused about because I'm like why would I be paying two extra months?? So what happens if I just do not pay the last month of rent in the apartment complex? They're being assholes and honestly, I'm over it.
