Brother In Jail. Are We, The Family, Liable To Pay Off His Debts Or Would It Be Written Off?

I live in Melbourne, Australia. Without giving away too much information, my brother is in jail and will be there for a very long time. He is owing a little over 2k to an insurance company for a car accident he was in a few years ago.

Would it be best to pay it off for him? Or should we leave it and hopefully they'll write it off?

I doubt they'd get him into court for such a small amount, but he's already in a lot of legal trouble and I just want to figure out what the best way is to go about this. I'm also wondering if telling them he's in jail and can't pay it off would be a bad idea. I'm worried they'll think he's easy pickings and get him to court, or if the debt will just continue to sit and amount interest until it's a huge amount once he does eventually get out of jail.

Thanks.
