Can A Landlord Charge Me For Carpet Replacement After I Moved Out?

Card image cap

I recently moved out of my apartment after living there for three years, and my landlord is trying to deduct $900 from my security deposit to replace the carpet. The thing is, the carpet wasn’t new when I moved in, and the only “damage” was normal wear—nothing extreme like stains or tears.

I pushed back, saying that replacing an entire carpet due to regular use doesn’t seem fair, but the landlord insists that it’s my responsibility. I’ve read that landlords can’t charge tenants for normal wear and tear, but I don’t know what actually counts under that rule.

I took pictures when I moved out, and I don’t see any damage beyond some flattened areas from furniture. I’m considering disputing the charge, but I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle or if I even have a case.

Has anyone successfully fought a similar charge? What’s the best way to handle this?
