Can I Get In Legal Trouble For Staying On Medi-cal If I Don’t Qualify?
I’m in California and I got on Medi-Cal last November when I was between jobs. Now I’ve been with a company for over a year, and I’ve still remained on Medi-Cal. My company offers insurance through a group plan (though they don’t contribute at all to it) however I would rather stay on Medi-Cal since everything is free. The thing, I make too much money to be eligible for Medi-Cal. My parents are concerned that the state is going to come after me for fraud if I don’t switch to my employer’s insurance.
Back in March, I submitted my paystubs on the Medi-Cal portal showing that I make too much to qualify, and was told to wait and hear back. Never heard back. The only correspondence I got was a letter in the mail last month saying I don’t need to make any changes to my healthcare plan if I’m satisfied with it (which I obviously am).
I even called Medi-Cal this morning, and they said there’s nothing I need to do and that I can stay on Medi-Cal since I didn’t receive anything saying I couldn’t. But is this true? I’m just paranoid because my parents are convinced that the state is going to come after me for “fraud,” even though I don’t see how I’m committing fraud by just not doing anything. Can anyone provide any advice?
