Can My Family Claim Assets From A Great Uncle Who Migrated To The Us During Ww1 And Likely Died Intestate In The 1960s?
I’m trying to determine if my family has any legal grounds to explore or claim the assets of my great uncle, who migrated from Hungary to the United States during World War I and settled in Ohio. He passed away in the mid-1960s, likely without a will, as communication between his original village in Soviet satellite Hungary and the U.S. was nearly impossible at the time.
We suspect he may have wanted to leave his estate to our family but was unable to assign it due to the circumstances. My family in Hungary was unaware of his passing until much later.
Given these details, I have a few questions:
- Is it possible to investigate whether he had any assets or an estate at the time of his death?
- If he died without a will (intestate), is there a process to claim inheritance as his relatives in Hungary?
- Are there any time limits or restrictions for claiming such assets after several decades?
Thank you for your guidance!
