Can My Landlord Demand I Pay A $100 Nsf Fee For A Payment That Was Not Mine?

For context I am in New Jersey, USA.

Recently my rent was paid via autopay by my old roomate (I still live in the apartment, he does not). He's not on the lease and hasn't been since August when I resigned. My landlord told me if he disputes the amount with the bank, I will get hit with the $100 charge of NSF even though it wasn't my bank account that was charged. Is this legal? I was under the impression that's once someone moves out and does not resign the lease, they have no legal obligation to pay the rent. And I don't think it's fair that I be hit with a $100 charge because they charged the bank account of someone that no longer lives there.

Hope this makes sense, happy to clarify if needed. TYIA!
