Can My Landlord Do This?
Got this email from my landlord yesterday: “Good morning, effective February 1, 2025, (my apartment complex) will accept online payments only. We were hesitant to make the change; however, in efforts to avoid having to increase rents due to the rising bank fees we are assessed for manual checks, we do not have a choice but to implement the 100% online payments only.
Appfolio charges the following when payments are made online: E-Check (ACH transactions) - Flat rate of $2.49 Debit Card - Flat rate of $9.99 Credit Card - 2.99% of transaction”
I live in the state of Nebraska. We moved here in 2021, and the only fee that you would have to pay for was on the debit or credit. Then I believe it was the year after or in 2023 they added the echeck fee as well. AND NOW THIS BULLSHIT???? Is this legal? Help!
I will add that when I asked for the lease, they emailed me with a copy and then stated this: “The original lease paragraph 1.2 Amount and Due Date of Rental Payments states: ...to Landlord at the on-site management office or to such other locations as the Landlord designates from time to time by written notice."
