Car Damaged After Oil Leak

I had an oil change at a shop just under 3 months ago and the car has ran fine since then. Yesterday I was driving the car and it died and would not start again. It had no oil in the engine so I had to have it towed. When I looked under the car I can see that most of the gasket on the oil filter is not there and it appears that's where the oil has leaked from.
The date of the oil change and someone's initials are hand written on the oil filter. According to the sticker showing when the next oil change is due, I have 5,000 miles or 3 months until the next oil change is due.
Is the shop that changed the oil liable to repair my engine?
Should I take it back to the shop that did the oil change, or should I take it to a different shop to verify the issue first?
The car is a 2015 and the value of the car is ~ $2,000. I suspect the repair may be at least that much. I am in Texas.
Thank you.
