Contractor Suing Despite Reviewing Agreed Upon Payment

We (me and my mother) had two separate contractors (not licensed, just local handyman) come into our house to install the flooring. The first guy tore out carpet for the rooms he was going to do, and installed some of the flooring. He recieved a 20% down-payment of 600 and another 150 for materials, as he bought sheet rock to patch up a wall too. He ended up being fired after working 6 pm to midnight or 1, sometimes bringing his 6 year old daughter for me or my mother to babysit while he worked. And that was when he did show up (usually 2 hours late and with little warning). He got about half of one room done 6 days after he started (it's not a big room), and when we finally fired him, we found out later from the second contractor that he was installing them incorrectly and backwards.
The second guy came and my mom walked him through the house and showed him the material and explained what she wanted him to do and she wanted him to also fix what the first guy did. He bid her about 1600 for everything, and then brought in a friend to help after the first day of work. The friend apparently told him he should be charging more for the type of flooring he was installing, so then closer to the end of the job being completed, he told my mom that it would cost more then he quoted her. They argued about it, but eventually my mom ended up giving him about 2300 after the job was complete.
Now the guy is threatening to sue, saying the flooring alone now costs 3200, but that's not including a small stair section he used peel and stick flooring for that he had been told before giving the bid that we wanted done. He also replaced outlets (not a licensed electrician), that the first guy had mangled, which my mom had mentioned in the initial walk through. And he wants extra for everything we had told him we wanted before he even bid on the job. And he's threatening to call my mom's work to get her fired and she's going to lose her job and he's calling her names and now has also gotten in touch with the first contractor and now they both want to sue her.
The second guy did okay work, I admit, but definitely nothing worth the 4K he's asking for, especially when his original quote was 1600 and he only changed it after almost everything was done. There are several areas where we are going to have to have a family friend come and help us fix it because it doesnt look good, and quote a few mistakes and forgotten areas that needed more work done on then. And he also left a big mess for us to clean up where we had let him cut things on the porch because the temps got below zero for a few days. And I really just don't know what to do to help. I told my mother to stop replying to him, but we don't really know what to do. He offered to just take the loss if she gives him another 550, but she just doesn't have that kind of money. Especially not after being the one to buy almost ALL of the materials they used.
He says she's a list and a thief and she's completely f*cked, and she's stressed out about it and doesn't know what to do, and it's already cost her a lot more money then she really had to spend for this whole process. She's been keeping receipts after the disaster with the first floor guy, and keeping track of what he's been saying and what they agreed to is written down, but there aren't any contracts. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated so I can have something to tell my mom so I can help her get through this with as little stress as possible.
*he also left his saw on our property in our fence, and when he got his tools he didn't grab that one for some reason, maybe he forgot it. We've told him a few times now to come and grab it, and gave him a deadline to pick it up or we'd put it outside the fence. With how angry this guy is, we don't want to give him access to our property more then we need to. But he's saying if it gets stolen we'd have to replace it. Would we have to, if we're warning him and giving him every chance to come get it? Do we need to give him a certain amount of days to come get it?
This has just been a nightmare ????????
