Could My Dad Claim I "stole" My Own Rifle?
This hunting rifle was gifted to me for Christmas a long time ago, and has stayed at my parents house ever since because it was convenient and, once my child was born, safer. But in the near future I will be going full no contact with my family, and as such I want my rifle back. Right now, while we're only in low contact, I am still free to come and go at my parents house as I please, that's just how our family is. I want to grab the rifle from their house when I drop off the letter going fully no contact. My only concern is that my dad will try to claim it stolen either just to spite me or force me into contact that I don't want. There's no paper trail transferring ownership from my dad, who purchased it at a gun store and therefore the registered owner, to myself because I was a minor at the time (we live in WI where a person can start hunting as young as 11 with proper hunter safety courses and parental supervision), and even if he had "sold" it to me private firearm sales don't require registration. We'd end up stuck in a quagmire of "he said, he said".
