Da Says I’m A Victim In A Criminal Case But I Don’t Know Why
Long story short I was threatened by a former patient who now lives in a different state. The police in that state filed a charge against the patient which is being handled by the local district attorney. The problem is that I cannot get access to the court documents. I don’t know what happened, what threat was made, how serious the issue is, or the status of the court proceedings. I have my attorney looking for info but he’s also having trouble getting the information without driving to that state and getting a physical copy from the court. The DA has not contacted me other than to mail me a victims request for restitution that allows me to claim damages.
This case has been very concerning due to lack of transparency by so many parties including the local police and crisis center who told me the patient threatened me but failed to provide any further information that would allow me to ensure my safety.
Since I received a victims restitution request does this mean that the patient was already convicted and is now being sentenced? Or do they send out these requests while the charges are still pending? Anyone have experience with restitution requests? So far the only cost to me has been a day of missed work while I (unsuccessfully) searched for information, and the mental toll of not knowing if I’m safe.
