Dad Passed Away In September And Mortgage Company Has Been Giving Me Problems.
My dad passed away at the end of September. I called his mortgage company within the first week of him passing but they wouldn’t speak to me or let me pay until I provided a death certificate. No problem. I sent over the Death certificate and the letter from the court (they didn’t ask for it, just the death certificate). I called back weekly for months and they still wouldn’t talk to me. I resent the paperwork. They now tell me I need to send my ID and birth certificate. So I send that in. Every time I call I have tried to pay on the mortgage but they refuse. Finally 2 weeks ago I was authorized as a 3rd party and could pay the back mortgage. So I did. Now they put a letter on my dad’s door saying the property is abandoned.
The company always asked a ton of questions about what I was planning on doing with the property. I am the type where I don’t want to make plans until I know it’s certain that I am getting the house so I told them I don’t know yet. We will likely move into it once it’s in my name in a few months but I don’t want to move everything only to have to move back again because some unforeseen force takes it.
What can I do to protect my dad’s house? If I am making payments on it, does it really matter what I do with it (live/rent/etc?)
