Deli Below My Apartment Burned Down In Nyc

Card image cap

Hello,

Last week the deli below my apartment in Brooklyn, NY caught on fire and the damage was extensive. While I don't believe the fire actually spread to my apartment, it was hot enough that the roof collapsed and my building's management has ended my tenancy. I have a few questions:

1) I did not have renter's insurance, does this mean that I have no recourse to be compensated for my damaged furniture (couch/loveseat/bed) plus some computer monitors and other various items that were damaged? The fire originated in the deli downstairs, so is there any chance their insurance/the building insurance could help reimburse me for these items?

2) I understand not being able to live there while the building is being repaired, but are they allowed to just terminate my lease like that? I was told I would need to find new housing and that they could not offer any assistance in that regard.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.
