Dmv Refusing To Acknowledge Legal Name Change Nj
I was born, initially licensed, married, legally took my husband's name, and got divorced all in NJ. During the divorce process, I moved to a neighboring state and asked about changing my name before getting a new driver's license there (I wanted a fresh start).
They sent me to the social security office, where I filled out a form, showed my birth certificate, original ss card, an expired passport in my maiden name, and whatever other documentation requested. They changed my name back and I was able to get my new license in my maiden name. No one gave me a permission slip - just a new ss card.
THIS WAS 25 YEARS AGO
I moved back to NJ and leased a new vehicle and they issued the registration in my old married name. They will not allow me to register any other vehicles because all of my identity records are in my maiden name, and they need proof that a judge in NJ ALLOWED me, in the divorce decree, to change my name - which was denied without prejudice.
They can see in their system the history of my NJ license, which was originally issued in my maiden name. I've presented a birth certificate, a social security card, a current passport, a current international identity card, my current driver's license (issued from another state), and they are refusing to acknowledge these legal documents because I didn't change my name in NJ. They're also refusing to change the current registration, even though the lease is in my maiden name.
I am beyond frustrated. What can I do?
