Do I Have Grounds For A Lawsuit?
I filled out my lease for a university-affiliated single apartment in November, and it was shortly approved. No signage was sent to me. I called asking if there were any further steps I needed to take, i.e. sign off on anything, prepay my rent, and I was told no. I assumed everything was fine and began planning to move out.
Two months later (today), following a very long drive hour with my relatives and friends in tow (having took the day off to help me move), the leasing manager told me my lease was invalid and that I can’t move in. Instead, they offered me a new lease with a completely different floor plan and a preexisting roommate. They also said I can’t move in until another two days—leaving me stranded in a new city with all of my belongings, completely alone (the friends and family whom came with me have to go home to go back to work). I ended up getting a hotel for the next few days, but I’m incredibly frustrated with the situation. I called several days ago and spoke with the leasing manager about another issue, in which she mentioned nothing about my lease being invalid and my room being unavailable. I’m also beginning to believe that the unit I applied for simply does not exist, which is a whole separate issue.
Do I have the grounds for a lawsuit? FYI I’m in PA now, but initially I am from NY.
