Estranged Family Pretends To Be Me On Insurance

Card image cap

Hi everyone:) I live in the United States for reference.

I haven’t spoken to my family in 3.5 years; we are completely estranged. I changed my phone number, moved states, and pay all my own bills. I have my own insurance policy, and have done so since I turned 18. My parents have an insurance policy in Rhode Island (private) and mine is in New York (private, not Medicaid.)

They’ve stalked me over the years, including finding my private email, phone number, making fake accounts to learn about my partner, and showing up at my workplace. This past September, they called my pharmacist pretending to be me to sign me up under their insurance. Not only does this creep me out, but now my personal insurance is being overridden and everything is being billed to them. Because their policy is older, no one’s computer system will let me re-activate my insurance policy.

I called the RI provider, and was able to confirm that the only account with me on it is under my parents. They cannot cancel the policy unless my father, the primary name, cancels it, or if his employer does. My father works for the police and his branch would not cancel me out of “respect” for him.

I am not and will not be comfortable reaching out to my family. We are estranged because of horrendous actions on their part. Further, if I did reach out to my father, I don’t believe he would remove the policy just because I asked.

I am not sure what to do. I have repeatedly failed to get a restraining order, though they are and always have been creepy, abusive, and controlling. If I am able, I know a lawyer and am a strong proponent of legal action. How can I force them to remove me?
