Estranged Father Currently Dying In Us Hospital. What Are My Responsibilities As A Canadian Citizen?

Card image cap

Hello all,

I've received a call this morning from a Virginia hospital that has already identified me as next of kin to inform me of his condition. They seem to want to talk to me if it comes down to pulling life support, but at this time they've only told me this is likely terminal and I have to hurry if I want to come see him. He's estranged and I don't think he'd even want me there.

I was told on the Canadian version of this subreddit that there's something called filial responsibility for the state of the hospital he's in - Virginia.

I have zero idea if he has insurance of any sort, and I have no desire to claim his body or bury him here - in fact his religious belief is to be buried where he has died.

What are my responsibilities in this situation? Can the hospital come after me for his hospital bill or funeral bill?

Thank you for your help.
