Ex Racked Up Fees And Fines Via Unpaid Tolls In A Car Under My Name

Card image cap

Hi all, my location is in Illinois

I owned a car that my ex drove for a period of time, and during that time they drove on the interstate without an iPass and racked up dozens of tolls. I just received letters in the mail today about roughly $750 in unpaid tolls/fines/fees that will be sent to collections at the end of January if left unpaid. I had thought that I'd paid these months ago, I had searched the plate number and VIN number on the website to make sure these were paid up. It was a big argument at the time that I not be the one to pay for any of this (there was also a red light ticket in this vehicle while they were driving that I paid for). I was not the operator of the vehicle during any of these tollway trips, we were not even on speaking terms, and I had already moved out. I'm able to pay for this current situation to prevent it from going to collections, but I wonder if small claims may be able to get me reimbursed?

I'm also curious if I'd have a criminal case for identity theft as they opened a credit line under my name without my knowledge or permission years ago. I didn't find out until a week or two after it happened when I got an email about it from the lender.

Thanks all
