Felon Took A Picture With Friends Gun.

So, months ago my close friend allowed someone to live in their house, temporarily. They didn't know this person was a convicted felon, and, of course, the person stole from them. They were kicked out after finding out - things were missing, used needles, that they were a felon, etc. They didn't go to the police yet because they didn't know the full extent of what was taken. Well, they recently saw their profile picture on a social account and realized they had managed to get ahold of one of their guns to take the picture. If they go to file a police report and include the picture, will my friend get in trouble for them having possession of their firearm when they didn't know?
