Fire Extinguisher Inspection Expired, Next Steps?
Location: South Ontario, Canada.
Fire extinguisher expired about 3-4 months ago with management being told multiple times with more than 2 months notice. Complaint sent to HR but it’s a large corporation concerned with money so they don’t care to address this in a properly timed manner.
Called my city by law twice on a Tuesday and again on a Wednesday during business hours, no answer at any point. Left a voicemail 2 times and another today asking for another call back as by law seems to be my only option (Ontario Health and Safety said they have no jurisdiction when I called due to local business and contractor laws so it all falls under municipal laws.)
What is my next legal option? How do I properly refuse unsafe work without being fired and somehow paying for food and rent? I can afford maybe a week without work but I need to be mindful of my own survival. I only say refusal of unsafe work because it is the only fire extinguisher in the entire building…. Located beside the only exit. Legal by mere centimetres.
The extinguisher could still work it’s a matter of it not being inspected and my store location manager is genuine unqualified and multiple times tried to tell me it doesn’t matter that the extinguisher is expired (type of manger to be too high while working…. Pretty much ignore them as an option I tried frankly too much. How dare I follow the proper channels and routes…..)
Any advice or resources would be incredibly helpful and appreciated. Blunt honesty on the Canadian legal system is encouraged I don’t need any sugar coating I need tangible results or to know I have legal right to take this further and maybe go on E.I if somehow possible (god I hope not I just want to pay my bills and eat my bad I don’t want my workplace to kill my so my already broke family doesn’t have to go even more in debt for my untimely funeral)
Edit to say this is a throwaway account as I’m horrified of unlawful termination. The company I work for constantly throws around threats of “if you don’t do x you could be terminated.” Often times super illegally and getting employees to sign random papers that have loads of spelling errors and lack of nuance.
