Forced Out Of My Home By Police

Card image cap

(30F, Michigan)Today the police showed up at my home and said they were following up on a suicide check based on a tip from my mother. For context, my mom and I do not have a good relationship. She is emotionally manipulative and abusive and has been for as long as I can recall. I had been attempting to reconnect with her which has not gone well and our last phone call ended with me saying to her “when you treat me like this it makes me not want to get out of bed” to tell her how she is effecting my self esteem. This led her to call the police due to a suicide concern. I am not suicidal, no history of self-harm or violent behavior, no prior arrest record.

The police arrive and tell me why they’re here to which I respond I am not suicidal and my mom is 100% wrong and has a history of doing things like this. They insisted they still needed to take me to the hospital for a psych evaluation to which I refused. They then told me they would forcibly take me and put me in handcuffs. I asked what evidence they saw that I was a threat to myself or others and they didn’t respond.

I was then taken to the hospital, under arrest I think, to which I was subjected to a strip search. This was humiliating. A male nurse was the one doing it and I requested a female to at least feel somewhat more comfortable, which was denied. I was held here for 8hrs and was not allowed to make a phone call.

Then they wanted to release me to my mother’s supervision. I am 30! I refused this as well. Eventually they did call me an uber home.

This was one of the worst experiences of my life and it all felt illegal the way the police and the hospital behaved.

Were my civil liberties violated or can the police take anyone from their home based on someone’s hearsay? Is the hospital wrong for refusing me a female nurse to conduct the strip search?
