Former Resident Still Lists My House As Their Address
Good morning all. This takes place in New Mexico.
My spouse and I bought our home from a real estate company around 4 years ago. Pretty much right after we moved in, we started receiving mail for what we perceived as the previous residents (we’ll call them the Porters). At first, we didn’t pay much mind since it was typically just junk mail (think like flyers, catalogs, coupons, etc.). Later, we started getting what seemed like important employment/insurance documents (just judging from the outside of the envelope). We have been putting those in the outgoing mail bin.
Recently, we received a jury services letter to our box addressed to Mr. Porter as well as several other legal-type notices addressed to him as well. Earlier this week, two local LEOs showed up at our house asking about Mrs. Porter. I told them that she hasn’t lived here in 4 years and that I’d never met her, but that we still get her mail so her address was probably never updated. They seemed fine with that answer (even though one of them walked through my closed gate into my backyard without asking) and left without much fuss. I personally don’t mind the police checking in on us and the neighborhood and don’t necessarily want to cause a problem with them over this, but I also would appreciate not being bothered over someone who hasn’t lived here in almost half a decade.
I guess I’m just asking if there’s anything I should do to address this. Should I call MVD and tell them their address needs to be updated? Postal service? Local police? Employers? Not really sure if I should (or even need to) do anything. Thanks for your help!
