Formor Employer Thinks He Owns Me

Card image cap

California. I worked for a man, who claims to own his own consulting business, for two days. The problem was he wanted to missclassify me as an independent contractor rather than an employee even though he required me to be at his house working on a computer for 8 hours per day. I never signed anything even though he wanted me to sign a contract and an NDA. I left after two days and told him it would not work for me.

Upon leaving he emailed and called asking me to come back. I ignored him and then he sent a letter to my house. In the letter he claims I broke our contract and that because I have cost him time I owe him money. He also made it clear he has no intention of paying me.

I ignored the letter because I never signed anything. I am aware that he has been sued multiple times for not paying employees. I also spoke with a former employee who filled a wage claim and complaint against him.

Since speaking with the other employee he has been calling my house and hanging up. I anticipate another letter. My question is do I have any legal obligation to this man if he takes me to court? Again I did not sign anything, but he's claiming I did. He has my social security number, so I think he's going to claim he paid, even though he did not.

The only agreement we had was that I would work as an office assistant. He recruited me on indeed and did not tell me about being an independent contractor until the second day of work. I thought I was an employee.
