Funeral Expense Accountability
I hope I posted this in the right sub reddit with the right flair, but I am not sure. Any help will be appreciated.
This week my father committed a suicide arson at his mother's house in Pennsylvania. This man was never really a father or family figure for anyone in my family. My mother divorced him but things were civil for the last few years but not much else.
I am now next of kin and figuring all this out for the first time. I live paycheck to paycheck and can not spare any money to go to a funeral or any other "unnecessary" costs. When I finally got ahold of the coroner I was informed that my father's cousin was on the scene at the time the coroner came and said he had already planned on using his family's funeral home and that I should contact him. Which I have, and stated clearly money will be a very big issue, funds include up to 0 dollars issue. Considering the Arson there is nothing left for the estate and no money from a life insurance policy if he even had one.
My father has apparently been released to the funeral home and preperations have begun. As stated I am next of kin, but I have not signed or agreed to any of these funeral expenses. My father's cousin must have signed all documentation. Can this be put on me? I could care less on if there was a service or anything. It would have to be closed casket due to the wounds he inflicted after he started the fire, and he were civil at best. He has passed and I dont want to/can't afford to put thousands into this man's funeral for others to tell pretty lies about him and keep up family appearances. The most contact with these people I have had was when the coroner called me today to confirm the next of kin agreed to the transport of the body. I said "I didn't know the cousin continued plans without talking to me, but I guess if he's doing the coordinating then he can be released."
Am I going to be on the hook for this? I didn't sign any of this, but I am next of Kin. I understand signing of contracts as binding for debt, but can I still be included just because I am next of kin.
