Getting Deceased Father’s Phone Back From Police.

I reside in Illinois. In Feb 2024, my father was shot and killed while delivering food. The police has been holding on to my deceased dad’s phone as evidence. Before he was shot, he was talking to the person who ordered delivery.

My father’s phone contains some important memories and content, and I would like the phone back. It seems like there is no progress with the investigation as we never heard back from the police.

Is there anything I can do to get the phone back? I tried asking the police previously and they said they cannot give it back. I don’t even know why they need to hold on to it. Couldn’t their forensic department make a copy of the phone’s image?
