Grandmother's Reverse Mortgage Funds Misused After Stroke By Uncle. Now We're Filing For Bankruptcy
Hello, this situation is overwhelming frustrating and I am organizing my thoughts as I type this.
In 2019 my Grandmother took out a reverse mortgage on her home in Columbia, MD to cover her daily finances. Shortly after the reverse mortgage she had a stroke and was unable to care for herself. This is when my uncle stepped in and took over caring for her and her finances. During the time she was in his care my grandmother was neglected and verbally abused by my uncles family, her home was left in such disrepair under there supervision that literal vines had begone to grow in the house. I am ashamed to admit that my mother and I had no idea she was in such a state until my mother flew to visit her. from there she took my grandmother back with her to FL where she currently lives and is in a much healthier and happier lifestyle.
The current problem is that no property taxes were paid the entire time my uncle was in charge leaving a 32k debt and there is about 180,000 dollar of funds used from the reverse mortgage between 2019 and 2023 that she never saw or used herself. The icing on the cake? My uncle passed away in 2023 so its not possible to bring a civil suit against him. I have until tomorrow to decide to walk away from the property my family has owned for almost 50 years and let the bank claim it or start an uphill legal battle against i don't know who.
To clarify my question is this: Is there a case of financial abuse or fraud? Or could I at the very least attempt to sue my uncles estate?(though it has most likely been picked clean by my cousins)
