Had An Incident While Driving A Semi In California For A National Trucking Company. A Lawyer Recently Contacted Me Offering To "accept Service" On My Behalf. What Does This Mean?

The incident happened a couple of years ago while driving for a company I no longer work for in a state (California) in which I no longer live. My steer tire blew out while I was on the freeway. I safely stopped the truck. There were no injuries. The blown tire caused minor damage to a nearby car. There was a police report, I was not ticketed.

Last week a lawyer contacted me saying the Plaintiff's attorney has been unsuccessful in locating me and has received a court order to serve me by publication. The lawyer asked me to authorize his office to accept service of the Summons and Complaint. I guess the lawyer who contacted me represents my former employer but I don't really know for sure. What should I do?
