Harassed By Cop And Ticketed Because He Claimed I Had "stolen Plates"
On my way home from work this evening, I noticed a cop following me very closely. After making a left turn, literally 5 minutes from home, I watch him flip his lights on and pull over. I was confused because I did nothing illegal. I wasn't speeding and I used my signal when turning.
He gets out and approaches my window and informs me that the plates on my car do not match the vehicle I'm driving (note: I traded in my previous car in November and purchased a new vehicle. I transferred the plates through my local DMV a month after the new vehicle was purchased.). It's obvious he thinks the plates are stolen. I give him my license, registration, and proof of insurance and sit there for 30 minutes while he runs my information. When he finally comes back with my documents, he also presents a citation.
The registration should have been proof enough, as it listed the license plate number along with my current vehicle's information. It is out of my control that the DMV has not processed the transfer yet, as they still need to send me the title to the new vehicle. I feel like I was targeted and harassed for no good reason and that I should have been let go after providing proper documentation.
What can I do in this situation? Should I file a complaint against the officer?
